Ladybugs

Ladybugs are friends to farmers and gardeners. They are helpful insects that protect your plants from pests. Insects that eat crops and plants are called pests.

Ladybugs are predators that eat insect pests, especially aphids Ladybugs can eat thousands of insects in their life. Baby ladybugs, called larvae, are very good hunters of insect pests.

Adult ladybugs are colorful to warn predators that they are toxic. A predator is an insect or animal that eats ladybugs. Ladybugs emit a bad tasting yellow liquid to stop predators from eating them. 

Ladybugs have 6 legs and oval shaped bodies. There are over 5000 different types. The red  and black spotted ladybug  is common in North America.
