Understanding fractions usually starts in preschool. Many young children understand the concept sharing half a cookie, they want a whole cookie! Math is really easy for young children to understand with hands on activities and life experiences.

Montessori Primary Guide has directions using Montessori circles cut into pie pieces to represent fractions. Check out the rest of the site for great instructions for Montessori materials.

• Here is a printout of the fraction circles.
• You can use these labels to teach the numerical symbol for fractions . Just match them to the right fraction pie.

Make your own domino game :

• Combine one fraction symbol and one circle fraction on a note card.  Make enough cards to match each other.
• You can use a dark marker pen to put a line between the two fractions on each card to make it easier to read.
• Make the game a simple matching game for beginners. You can make the game more complex for older children.
