Caterpillars love to eat and eat. They eat lots of leaves. They eat all day long! They love food so much that they eat 20 times more than they weigh.
Caterpillars grow so fast that they out grow their skin. Each time they shed their skin they look different than before. The last time a caterpillar sheds its skin it fastens to a stem. Then the caterpillar wiggles out its old skin. The new skin is a hard shell called a chrysalis.
Inside the chrysalis something strange happens. The caterpillar turns into a different form. When it comes out of the chrysalis it looks very different. Can you guess what it will look like? It is a butterfly!
